Epicly Later’d is a documentary about John Cardiel. The quality is pretty gritty, but it seems to complement Cardiel’s style. Sometimes sad, mostly joyful, always incredible. Plenty of profanity here, so if you’re sensitive to that sort of thing, don’t watch. You’ll also want to hit the full screen tab as I couldn’t figure out google video’s wacky embed...

I love this scene from Purple Rain. Not only does Prince get Apollonia to jump in the cold water of not-Lake Minnetonka, he also powerslides and jumps his custom 1981 Honda CB400A Hondamatic. Yes, of course it’s a stunt rider and yes, the bike changes mid-scene as evidenced by different rear tire treads, but he says “Don’t get my seat all wet” and gets a kiss.

The vast majority of artistic glass is cheesy, tacky stuff that may be nice to look at for a moment in a studio but I’d never want in my home. I appreciate the workmanship involved, but most of it is hideously overpriced and well, just hideous. Kiva Ford’s artistic glass is not much different, however insanely skillful and talented he undoubtedly is (okay, this intricate tiny heart in...

Orien MacDonald makes tools from his Gila, NM home. Specifically hand-forged knives, carving tools, archery bows, and other useful wood and metal items. He appears to knock out a beautiful kitchen knife over the course of a day in this video, a serious feat of skill. His prices are reasonable and knowing that you’ll have a one of a kind hand made item is well worth the cost. His inventory is...

Honor the great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. today. A couple of his speeches are presented here, including one of my personal favorites, the moving “Mountaintop” speech he gave the night before his assassination in which he seems to know he won’t be alive much longer. If nothing else, click here to watch an excerpt of the speech. Thanks Democracy Now. Thank you Dr. King.

Here we have summary coverage of the Dakar from 1979-1986, in the wild old days when rallying through African villages at breakneck speeds was “safe.” Vimeo user Waihou Thumper has graciously uploaded all of these episodes from Eurosport TV. Up to the 2008 break, all but the 2006 and 2007 versions are there. I’m not sure if they’ve done similar coverage in 2009, 2010, and...

Best Made Company makes handcrafted axes in New York City. Yep, an axe-maker in NYC. Looks like they do a pretty nice job too. Founder Peter Buchanan-Smith makes a compelling argument for the handmade and the place of this iconic tool within American history and culture.
I can’t help but think of Ray Mears and a few great segments of his regarding axes. Click here, here, and here for...

If you’re like me you enjoy the occasional nature show on PBS. If you’re really like me, you don’t have a TV to watch PBS on. The good news is that they share a ton of good programming online, including this WInter in Yellowstone special. I recommend going full screen for this, as the embedding is funky here. Just press play, then click in the bottom right of the player above....
