Our friend Matt Shallenberger of Field Theories hand-makes these handsome leather portfolios. He sent us a couple over the holidays, and we couldn’t be more pleased with them. They come in a range of sizes from a small clutch purse to an extra large special LP size. I received a large which is perfect for papers or even my laptop, while Maria was given a medium which fits her iPad and miscellaneous items. I immediately applied a coat of Obenauf’s Heavy Duty LP Leather Preservative to mine and it looks and feels great. One of my favorite things about leather is the way it ages; the more you beat it up, the better it looks (given a modicum of care). I’m looking forward to watching the character of this folio change over time.

Upon receiving it I could immediately see and feel the quality of material and workmanship. The design is simple, a single piece of full grain leather folded and held together with a couple of rivets, with a single leather strap to wrap it shut. My initial desire to have some kind of snapping closure was satisfied by the simple strap design; it holds quite well and brings an interesting visual element that a button or snap fastener wouldn’t otherwise add.

From Field Theories, “19th century trappers carried a ‘possibles’ bag, within which they put everything they might possibly need in a day. In that spirit we’ve made these leather envelopes.” One of these portfolios would make a seriously nice gift, and as a sweet personalized touch you can also add a custom monogram to be stamped in at no extra cost. In addition to these portfolios, Matt’s also making some nice waxed canvas bags and aprons. Be sure to check out the Field Theories tumblr for more pics and info and the Field Theories Etsy Store to make a purchase.
